Apple Walnut Brown Betty

A Brown Betty is a traditional American fruit dessert. Similar to a cobbler or a bread pudding, it is made of layers of slightly sweetened and spiced fruit and buttered bread crumbs – very easy and a great use of left-over bread. Enjoy!

2 – 16 oz. jars High J Orchards Chunky Honeycrisp Applesauce
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2tablespoons dried currants or cranberries (optional)
2 slices whole-grain bread or 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
1/4 cup quick-cooking oats
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350F.

Mix applesauce with spices, vanilla extract and dried fruit if using.
Pour into a 9-inch glass pie or 8″ square glass dish.
Place bread in a food processor and pulse to form coarse crumbs.
Combine breadcrumbs, walnuts, oats, butter and 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl, working mixture with your fingers to blend. Sprinkle over applesauce and bake, uncovered, 20 to 25 minutes, until lightly browned.
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, or pour a little chilled heavy cream on side.
